With the end of the Civil War, the ideas of abolitionism prevailed. From 1865, through the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, slavery was formally abolished. The Black Codes introduced by whites in the South nevertheless limited the freedom of the African-Americans with low wages, restrictions in access to education and thus their possibilities for emancipation. With the installation of the Freedmen's Bureau, the US government had created an organism to defend the rights of the freed slaves, but on the other hand, it also looked for ways not to ruin the economy of the Southern States after the loss of free slave labor.
