The Kingdom of Axum was an ancient nation that existed from the 80s BC until 825, located in the northern part of today's Ethiopia and Eritrea.

It developed thanks to trade contacts between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa. From the port of Adulis, goods such as rubber, ivory and spices were transported to the Mediterranean basin, as well as to India and Ceylon. It experienced a period of splendor between the 300s and the 400s, when it expanded its borders to the south and west and became one of the biggest powers of the Middle East at that time. In the middle of the fourth century, during the reign of Ezana, Axum adopted Christianity through Syrian merchants.
