t is very likely that a totalitarism would not have succeded without the precedent of the economic crisis, as popular support towards the Nazi party was triggered due to the miseries that the German Weimar Republic was suffering in its final years. Such miseries were the consequences of the crisis and of the impositions of the Treaty of Versailles.

The Weimar Republic faced numerous problems, mainly economic, related to the accomplishment of the requeriments established by the Treaty of Versailles and the payment of the excessive war reparations imposed on Germany after WWI. Such impositions prevented economic recovery and stagnation led to hyperinflation. Moreover, political extremism and paramilitary forces started to arise, and these were fed by the tense relationships that Germany maintained with the victorious powers of WWI (UK and specially, France).

This whole situation triggered the social sucess of Hitler, who promised to regain German pride and power and started by defying Germany's European enemies. As a consequence, the electorate preferred to support his ruling rather than the former type of goverment.
