El Presidente de los Estados Unidos, Thomas Jefferson, estaba muy interesado en comprar lo que en aquel entonces se llamaba el "Territorio Louisana," principalmente por razones políticas, económicas y estratégicas para los Estados Unidos.

Estados Unidos no veía con buenos ojos que los Franceses tuvieran control de esa gran porción de territorio porque en cualquier momento podrían bloquear las entradas o salidas de los Estados Unidos. Algunas por tierra, otras por mar, como lo era el caso de la Florida, que en esa época estaba en manos de los Españoles.

Así es como el Presidente Jefferson mandó a James Madison a París, Francia, para acelerar la compra de ese territorio que se concretó en 1803. Con esa transacción los Estados Unidos adquirieron los territorios que ahora conforman los estados de Louisiana, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, y partes de Nuevo México, Texas, Wyoming, Montana, y Colorado.
