The Southern states in the first half of the 19th century depended on the slaves to perform work in the fields of cotton plantations. For the plantation owners, slavery was the backbone of the economy of the South. Slaves forced to work in cotton fields from sun up to sunset. The southern delegates would have wanted to secure the institution of slavery without any interruption from the North. The consequence of a ban in slavery would have turned out to be war, as it did happen in the 1860s in America, where the South was fighting for authorising slavery.
