The historic Rizal was Jose Rizal, a polymath, skilled in both science and the arts.  This Philippine patriot, writer, and poet was executed by the Spanish Colonial Authorities in 1896 for dazzling and insulting the authorities with his liberal political ideas and fights with the pen.

The symbolic Rizal represents all that Jose Rizal stood for, including nationalism, democracy, political liberalism, free expression, heroism, and especially his iconic symbol: "a pen is mightier than the sword."
