Read this counterclaim by an opponent of the New Deal. Herbert Hoover, a Republican opponent of the Democrat Roosevelt, believed that the government's role was to stay out of the way of private relief efforts and to not provide direct relief for the people. Therefore, his supporters called New Deal programs expensive, ineffective, and unconstitutional. Which evidence would best support a rebuttal to this counterclaim?
