It was a placed overcrowded exceding by more than four times its occupancy capacity, it had poor water supply that propitiated the spread and development of diseases, it didn't have enough food rationing, and it was on unsanitary conditions. It was so bad, that after the war the victors charged war crimes on Captain Henry Wirz. The major causes of death in that place were: diarreah, scurvy, and dysentery.
