It forced them out of the "Cult of domesticity" (Men work in the public sphere, women work in the private one). While WWII did give women many jobs in the public work force, it wasn't as much as many think. What it more importantly did was push more for women's sufferage,(women were allowed even more freedom in new spheres like industry and education) even more than after the 19th amendment in 1920.
