1. Leading up to the Civil War, the number of slave and free states were about equal. When the government passed the Kansas-Nebraska act, it created the the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and it let  the people in the state vote on whether or not it would be a slave or free state. Kansas would disrupt the delicate balance between slave and free states, so hoards of people for and against slavery rushed into Kansas to try to influence the vote, massacring each other to try to achieve the majority. This is known as Bleeding Kansas, and it showed how the North and South would brutally fight over the issue of slavery, truly showing the division between them.

2. The Wilmot Proviso said that slavery would be banned in all of the territory the US got in the Mexican-American war. This triggered a lot of people so four years later in 1850 the Compromise of 1850 was created. This compromise diffused the main controversy that went on with the Wilmot Proviso because gave the North and the South equal benefits that balanced out what went down with the Proviso.

California was admitted as a free state, this border dispute between Texas and New Mexico was settled, and they prohibited the slave trade in DC.

Texas was also given $10 million dollars and slavery itself was kept legal in DC. The Fugitive Slave law was passed, which required people in the North to return runaway slaves to their owners. Slavery was also not restricted in the territories of New Mexico and Utah.

3. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery. The fourteenth amendment gives all people citizenship rights and due process under the law for all U.S. citizens. The 13th amendment freed the slaves, while the 14th amendment undid Dred Scott v. Sandford and allowed blacks to be citizens of the United States. It allows people of all races to receive the rights given in the Constitution, showing that We The People means all of the U.S. citizens. The 13th amendment brought them out of the darkness and the 14th brought them into the wonderful light of liberty and freedom our country provides and continues to give to all people today.
