What did President James Buchanan do in response to the secession of South Carolina?

Seven Southern states have declared their secession from the Union In response to Lincoln's victory. Buchanan declined to use military force against the succeeded states but maintained control of Fort Sumter. Shortly after Buchanan left office, the secession crisis culminated in the outbreak of the American Civil War war.
