One of the most significant reasons behind New Imperialism was the desire for political and military power. During New Imperialism several European countries were competing for influence and power, which is one of the reasons imperialism in Africa was so popular. It was barely colonized at the time. This is the reason it was called the "Scramble for Africa." The second most important reason is economics. New colonies meant new resources, new markets, and new sources of labor. They were also enabled by new technological advancements which made conquering territory much easier. The least important reason was social reasons because compared to the significance of Economic opportunity, Political power, and technology, it had very few benefits that impacted everyone.

a democracy is a government run by the people either by directly voting or indirectly by electing representatives. an oligarchy is a government run by a few or a small group of people. a democracy and oligarchy are similar because both in an oligarchy and an indirect democracy, a small group of induvial determine the laws for a large group of people they are different because in an oligarchy it is easier to control and they do not have to answer to a large number of people in the country, unlike a democracy where they do have to answer to a large number of people an county that is a democracy would be the united states. a country that is an oligarchy would be the china.
