Edwin B. Stanton –Lincoln’s war secretary. Believed in the anti-slavery idealism. Was suspended in August1867 by Johnson who was adamant to get rid of him after coming to power, but was later reinstated during thefollowing winter.Radical Republicans -Believed that the federal government should redistribute confiscated lands to the freedpeople as well as provide civil rights and the option to vote. They also believed that whites of the southern stateswho refused to remain loyal during the war should have their right to vote revoked.Lincoln’s Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction –[December 1863]Lincoln’s attempt to offer fullpardon and restoration of civil rights to all those who swore loyalty to the union.Wade-Davis bill –The Radical republican’s response to Abraham Lincoln’slenientproclamation of amnesty &reconstruction (ten percent plan).They wanted to require a majority of a state’s white voters to swear allegianceto the union before reconstruction could begin. Radical republicans also sought harsher punishments fortreasonous confederate southern states. They wanted to increase the republican power and forms of governmentin those states. And would also require an oath proving they had never supported the confederacy (Thisexcluded most white southerners as they had supported the confederacy in one way or another.) Lincolnbelieved this bill would do harm to political alliances, so he pocket-vetoed the bill by taking no action.Thirteenth Amendment –Prohibits slavery in the United States. (Passed June 1865)
