The Theodora wife of emperor Theophilos significance is that she was canonized in recompense for her zeal on behalf of the restoration of icons as objects of veneration. Saint Cyril significance is he is chiefly known for his campaign against Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, whose views on Christ's nature were to be declared heretical. Saint Methodius significance is that his disciples were driven out by the Franks and took refuge in Bulgaria, where subsequently they were instrumental in the establishment of Christianity. Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, as the 'teachers of the Slavs', played an important symbolic role in the Ukrainian national awakening of the 19th century.
