The main principle of this amendment is that any citizen may be accused of a crime by the state, so the state must ensure their legal protection. The amendment prevents the police and courts from using illegally obtained evidence. It allows for limits on police when they are investigating a crime. But there are certain types of searches that citizens aren't protected against by the Fourth Amendment.
