The French traded with the Indians for furs that they then took back and sold in Europe because people were willing to pay a lot of money for furs in Europe. The French and British empires differed in how the colonies were settled by citizens of the colonial empires. The British colonies were much more heavily settled by shiploads of settlers who built towns and homesteads (through the murder and forced displacement of Indigenous people).
