What caused the development of malls in the us?

In the rise of Suburbia US malls were created because they wanted to form group of communities and they wanted to create spaces for Amercians to gather in one particular place.In 1956  at Edina, Minnesota, the first mall in U.S was built a suburb of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. This mall is known as Southdale Center Mall.
