Prior to the election of Abraham Lincoln as the President of the United States, there were issues almost leading to the collapse of the Northern and the Southern region of the United State

However, President Lincoln address this by offering a providential reading of emancipation in hopes of reuniting the country.

He preserved the Union by freeing the slaves to weaken the Southern resistance, strengthen the Federal government and encourage free blacks to fight in the Union army.

However, his Vice-President Andrew Johnson opposed the view because he did not believed the slaves freedom will help preserve the Union.
