Consider the following scenarios: A. Two smaller countries argue over a small area of land between their countries. No force has been used yet, but both countries have threatened military action.
B. A dictator comes to power in a large country and begins rebuilding their military.
C. A large country invades a small, neighboring country.
Remember, the Great Depression has made it difficult for the League of Nations to work. Countries who belonged to the League of Nations were suffering from the Depression. Providing the League with aid was not an option for many. Governments were also not able to pay for military personnel and supplies for the League. The Depression made it so the League was unable to confront aggressive countries. During the Great Depression, trade had declined between countries. Imposing economic sanctions on countries during the Depression would have made economies suffer even more. Dictators rose to power during the Great Depression, with Germany, Italy, and Spain adopting fascist ideology. In this assignment, imagine you are a top member in the League of Nations. Your task is to handle the scenarios presented.
Assess each scenario and answer the following questions.
1. Rank the scenarios by order of importance or urgency. Explain your reasoning.
2. How would you try to handle each scenario? (Keep in mind what you have learned about the effects of the Great Depression on the League.)
