Present-day Louisiana was once part of New Spain. The coat of arms that you see pictured here is from the province of Louisiana in New Spain. The first Acadians arrived in the Spanish colony of Louisiana in 1765. They migrated from Saint-Domingue, which is present-day Haiti.

They settled in the Attakapas district, in present-day Lafayette Parish, and the French provided the settlers with land, livestock, and tools. The governor thought these new settlers would protect the colony from encroachment from the British settlers from the east. Now, let me expand on this just a little bit.
