European Union (EU)

Now, another well-known supernational organization is the European Union. Now, the European Union is an organization of European states, which was established in 1992 with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. Now, basically, this organization created an economic block, whereby the countries together could feel free to drop all tariffs and barriers to trade.

People could move freely from one country to another for work and so forth.  And so it's very similar to the United States in that respect. If you live in California, and you get a job in Texas, there's nothing that prevents you from taking that job. And it's kind of the same thing here.

The other thing that they did was established the European Monetary Union, and a common currency among members called the Euro. So many countries in the European Union dropped their old currency and adopted this one single currency. That includes countries like Germany and France.

And they did this to make it easier to trade and travel, because that way you don't have to change money every time you go from country to country to country. Now not every country in the European Union has adopted the Euro. Several have kept their own currencies, including countries like the United Kingdom, which still uses the British Pound.
