A few men escaped and told Onate, who believed he had to retaliate swiftly and completely. Onate's soldiers fired on Acoma, scaled the cliffs with guns, and a fierce battle ensued. More than 100 people were killed and the rest were taken prisoner and put on trial. At the trial, every person was found guilty. Men lost a foot and men and women were sent to a life of slavery.
