Why were the achievements of Muslim scholars significant to world history?

In the special atmosphere created by Islam, the scholars preserved existing knowledge and produced an enormous body of original learning. Over time, the influence of Muslims grew as the empire encompassed people from a variety of lands. Jobs in the bureaucracy and in the army were available to many different groups.
