There was a great division between the states on slavery. The final signed constitution was a compromise and slavery was never mentioned however pro slavery elements. Benjamin Franklin called it an imperfect document, however for the good of the country moving forward he signed it and gave a speech in support. In short the debate will always be should the founders put up a more vigorous anti slavery position.
