Native Americans of the Great Plains and the Southwest were nomadic tribes, following animals and other sources of food throughout the year.  The Great Plains Indians adapted to their vast environment by following and hunting the buffalo; they were significantly more nomadic than the Southwest tribes.  As stated in our textbook, they used hardwood bows strengthened with buffalo tendon to adapt to their environment.  The arrows were tipped with sharpened stones to kill the buffalo and use the meat for food and hides for clothing, shields, containers, and bedding.  The buffalo dung even provided fuel for fires.  In contrast, Southwest American Indians were only slightly nomadic; many farmed fields of corn, beans and squash atop the high mesas of the desert Southwest.  Because there was a lack of trees throughout much of the region, they built houses out of adobe or sunbaked clay that would keep them cool in the hot summers and warm in the cold winters.  Instead of animal hides for clothing, these First Americans utilized cotton that was ornately decorated with the dyes from plants and minerals.  Finally, corn was the most important crop and the same clay that was used to make houses also provided the pots to cook cornmeal, stews, rabbit meat and chili peppers.  Like many natives of North America, the tribes of the Great Plains and Southwest adapted to their environment with the resources they had at hand, whether it was the mighty buffalo or the simple kernel of corn.
