I think that a combination of victory and trade allowed both the Tang dynasty and the Han dynasty to spread over a larger territory. The second Tang ruler, Taizong, strengthened the military, which probably helped the Tang conquer several weaker governments. The Silk Road opened up several trade routes, which allowed the Tang to travel to both nearby and remote places. The trade route may have also added to the spread of the Tang. Similar to the Tang dynasty, the Han dynasty also owned a powerful military. The military enabled the Han dynasty to overcome many weaker states and extend its empire. The Han dynasty also helped increase the Silk Road trade route, opening gateways for trade and the exchange of opinions between China and other lands.
