In the Spanish colonies Christianity was one of the big components of colonization.

Explanation: Often when hearing about the Spanish Conquistadors in North America you often hear the saying "For God, Gold, Glory" This is bascially summing up the goals for the Spaniards in conquering the New World. They had wanted to get rich, convert the native peoples to Catholicism, and spread their empires influence. So over the years, Spain had been colonizing the areas of the New World to convert the natives to be Catholic from Mesoamerica to New Mexico.
