In the 1800's is when Christmas was first celebrated with stockings and cookies. They originally used their socks, but then it evolved into specifically made socks that are now called 'Christmas Stockings' Santa has been around for a long time,  since 280 A.D. (First found in Turkey). But in 1862 Thomas Nadst drew a small elflike creature who supported the Union, that later became known as Santa Claus. The coat was originally drawn in brown, but over the span of the 30 years Thomas continued to draw it, he turned the coat red.
