The three groups in the U.S. were anti-slavery (mainly the Northern States), pro-slavery (mainly the Southern States), and the neutral-slavery (mainly the Western States). The anti-slavery group was completely against slavery and wanted it abolished. The pro-slavery group wanted to keep slavery and also wanted slavery to be allowed in newer states. Lastly, the neutral-slavery group was mixed between abolishing slavery and keeping it.

The Missouri Compromise was resolved by forbidding slavery in Louisiana and any territory that was once part of it in the Louisiana Purchase. Slavery was also forbidden anywhere North of the 36° 30' line, except within the territory of Missouri. While the South was allowed slavery everywhere below the 36° 30' line. Those living on land South of this line could own slaves if its citizens chose when they applied for admission to the Union.
