The United States had a neutral position and did not want to get involved in the war. However, in 1917 as a result of the submarine warfare between Germany and the United Kingdom, some American ships were destroyed.

On the other hand, the intelligence service of the United Kingdom intercepted a telegram sent to the German ambassador in Mexico to propose an alliance to the president of Mexico against the United States. This event is known as the Zimmermann Telegram.
