So the first part, just mental counting, is workable. I trained (not taught) myself to do so by starting with counting off seconds while watching a clock, and then looking away from the clock, counting ten seconds, and looking back, and repeating and increasing. It took me weeks of very occasional practice.

The second problem is one called deixis, and it’s a real problem related to pointing (as in, what’s next?). Did you just count 447, or was that the next one? Over time, you drift significantly. This has been studied by cognitive psychologists (including a mentor of mine and one of his students), but I don’t know of any solutions. Yes, you can count “one, two, three ,ten, two, three…”, but you still ultimately have a problem of drift.
