Despite his well-to-do upbringing, Jefferson was a strong believer in the abilities of the ”common man.” He was convinced that if people had enough information on an issue, they were capable of making smart decisions. He believed that power concentrated in the hands of a few was dangerous. he thought that is only a few had too much power, they might be tempted to govern for their own benefit and not in the interest of everyone. Therefore, according to Jefferson, the power of any government must ultimately rest in the hands of the people so that everyone is represented. How do you think Jefferson would describe the “common man?”
