Read this excerpt from The Call of the Wild. It was a monotonous life, operating with machine-like regularity. One day was very like another. At a certain time each morning the cooks turned out, fires were built, and breakfast was eaten. Then, while some broke camp, others harnessed the dogs, and they were under way an hour or so before the darkness fell which gave warning of dawn. The dogs' owner in this part of the story is very different from Hal and Charles, who next take possession of the dogs, because he feeds the dogs and organizes a predictable life. demands that the dogs work harder and travel more. expects that the dogs will do more than pull the sled. hopes that the dogs will be ready to travel every day
