Emiliano Zapata, Mexican revolutionary, champion of agrarianism, who fought in guerrilla actions during and after the Mexican Revolution (1910–20). Zapata was the son of a mestizo peasant who trained and sold horses. He was orphaned at the age of 17 and had to look after his brothers and sisters.

The new constitution was proclaimed on 5 February 1916. Carranza had no strong opposition to his election as president. In May 1916, Carranza became the constitutional President of Mexico. Carranza achieved little change while in office, and those who wanted to see a new, liberal Mexico after the revolution were disappointed.
