Federalism is a system of government that divides both responsibilities and power between the national and the state government. For example, the national government would be able to declare war, regulate foreign trade, and coin money. The state government would be able to establish local government and regulate business within the state. Both governments would be able to charter banks and maintain law and order. One advantage of federalism is that it helps foster state loyaltie. Federalism helps maintain the connection many Americans feel to their states by allowing the states to have power. One disadvantage of federalism is that in some ways it can prevent us from making national policies. Federalism allows states to make their own rules, creating lack of single policies on issues. Instead it have at most 50 different policies, which can cause confusion.  

Explanation: federalism is a government that splits its power and its responsibilities. There are shared powered and separate powers. Like every form of government it has its pros and cons.
