Similar to New England colonies, the Middle colonies also flourished in trade of major items like iron and furs. The middles colonies had rich farmland and a moderate climate. This made it a more suitable place to grow grain and livestock than New England. The Southern colonies had fertile farmlands which contributed to the rise of cash crops such as rice, tobacco, and indigo.

The colonies were alike in that they all had close ties to England. They were mainly populated by English-speaking people. The Middle colonies and New England had some slaves, while the southern colonies had africans as most of the population.
