As white Americans pushed west, Native Americans suffered loss of land, disease, and forced change. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 created Indian Territory, a place reserved for eastern Native American tribes. Though they lost the case of Cherokee Nation v. Georgia, the Cherokee reached independent status through the Supreme Court case of Worcester v. Georgia. However, a controversial treaty allowed removal to continue. The Trail of Tears was a painful event for the Cherokee people.
