Why was the petition written by Pennsylvania German Quakers in 1688 significant? It outlined the Quakers' support for slavery and the slave codes. The Quakers declared that they had decided to return to Europe. It was the first public statement to protest slavery in America. The southern colonies surprisingly rushed to support it.
