The tribes resisted U.S. efforts to relocate them for decades and engaged in raids. Geronimo was an Apache who led several raids against the Americans there until both the U.S. and Mexican armies made it a top priority to capture him which they did in 1886.

He was the last leader to surrender and the raids ceased. This allowed more settlers to come into the territory which eventually paved the way to statehood.
