Missouri wanted to be admitted to the Union as a Slave state.

The state of Missouri entered the Union on August 10, 1821. In doing so, Congress admitted Main as a free state, to maintain the balance of slave and non-slave states. Congress also passed an amendment for an imaginary division of free and slave state, across Louisiana. It served well until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
