4. Prosser's Rebellion (Gabriel's Conspiracy): In August of 1800 Gabriel, an enslaved man, was inspired by an uprising of enslaved people in Saint Domingue, the words and ideas of the American and French Revolutions, and two abolitionist minded Frenchmen that he met in a tavern. He worked with a group of other enslaved people, free African Americans, and a few white workers, to take the Virginia Governor James Monroe hostage and . The plan to attack several cities and counties simultaneously, fell apart 25 enslaved men, including Gabriel were tried, found guilty, and executed.
