Explain the Clermont and Fulton

Fulton was not the first person to build an operable steamboat and was not the first person to receive a patent for a steamboat. Fulton's achievement was being the first person to build a practical and commercially successful steamboat, the "North River Steamboat", now commonly referred to as the "Clermont".
