How did the alliances in place before world war 1 affect the war

While the alliance system didn't start WWI it did increase the scale. When a country gets attacked it's allies will help it. For example if an enemy nation invaded Mexico the United States would help fight the enemy. This puts wars of allied countries on an extremely large scale. However if counties with no allies were to go to war the result would be on a much smaller scale. That is why it is good for countries to maintain allies because enemies are less likely to start conflict with allied countries due to the mass scale of it.
