classical conditioning was developed by ivan pavlov after his experiments with dogs. it works through stimulus and response.

two types of stimulus are used in combination: a conditioned stimulus (cs) which is neutral as, for example, a sound ,and an unconditioned stimulus (us) which is potent in a biological way, as for example food or its smell. us causes a reflex response (salivation). by repeating cs and us together, learning happens and the reflex response will be observed after cs too.

the main difference between classical conditioning and other types   such as operant conditioning is that the first consists on the association of stimulus while the second is related to the effects of these stimulus.
