The government has three branches to make sure no one person gets too much power. The Executive Branch’s role is to carry out laws. It is run by the President, the Vice President, the Executive Office and the Cabinet. The President is the leader as the head of state and the Commander-in Chief of the armed forces. The Vice President advises the President and must take over if something happens to the President.
The President is responsible for keeping peace with other countries and signing treaties. The President must be at least 35 years old, be a natural born US Citizen, and have lived in the United States for at least 14 years. The President and Family live in the White House in Washington DC. To make sure the President doesn’t get too much power, they can only serve for two four-year terms. The President has the power to approve new laws made by Congress or veto (disagree with) them. If the President vetoes a law, Congress can still make the law if two-thirds vote to do so.
Many independent federal agencies help enforce the laws. The President appoints their leaders. The Senate must approve each appointment. These leaders are sometimes part of the President’s Cabinet. The Cabinet is made of the leaders of 15 different departments, including Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Executive Office of the President (EOP)
is the President's closest advisers who help
the President be effective and efficient
with daily decisions and responsibilities. It
includes the White House Communications
and Press Secretary.
