Many factors contributed to the United States annexation of Hawaii in 1898.
In the 1800s, Christian missionaries came to
Hawaii. Many Hawaiian rulers converted to
Christianity. As a result, some traditional
native practices were banned, including
hula, storytelling, and native dress. Native
Hawaiians who wanted to retain their cultural
identity largely influenced the anti-annexation
movement of 1897–1898. Hawaiians who had
converted to Christianity supported the idea
of becoming a territory of the United States.
