During the civil war, Harriet Tubman worked first as a cook and nurse for the soldiers and later as a scout and a spy. She went behind enemy lines and collected information for the Union government.

" In 1863, she led Union forces in the Combahee River Raid, which liberated more than 700 slaves in South Carolina."

After the  civil war, Harriet Tubman toured Eastern cities and gave speeches to support women's suffrage. She drew on her experiences in the fight against slavery, and became a prominent voice in the women's suffrage campaign. She lived in Auburn, New York in a small house that was given to her by abolitionist Senator William H Seward.

In the year 1913, in a home that she had donated for the elderly, Harriet Tubman died of pneumonia, surrounded b family at 91 years old.
