Popular sovereignty or the sovereignty of the people is the principle that the authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives (Rule by the People), who are the source of all political power.

The federal government should decide whether states should be free of slave states bc slaves are bought and either they can't decide to be slaves or not. tHey ARe bOugHt. They must stay with their owner bUt.. Who said they couldn't try to escape ? If they escape, they could be free.
