During his presidency, Roosevelt faced many problems facing the New Deal policies. He faced opposition from a conservative-dominated Supreme Court who struck down a number of his policies during the First New Deal in particular. The Supreme Court no doubt helped push Roosevelt into pursuing more radical legislation after 1934, such as the Social Security Act.  

The political "right" accused Roosevelt of not going far enough with his relief programs.

The political "left" accused Roosevelt of going too far and creating a nation dependent on government handouts.
