What factors led to a massive expansion in the size and scope of the federal government in the inter-war years? What new roles did the government take on?

I love the sound of wet skinned turkeys and slapping them until all their Turkey skin gets all loose and crinkled and then I start licking the Turkey and munch on them but I don’t eat em.
